Texas Capital Building
Texas' Capital Building in Austin
It's not hard to figure out why Austin is the second-fastest growing city in the US.  As the capital city of Texas, home of several universities, St Edwards, Texas State, and the University of Texas (Hook 'Em, Horns!), and home to a rapidly growing tech sector (companies like Apple, Dell, Intel, Motorola all have offices in Austin), the Capital City attracts a very diverse, young, and vibrant crowd.  Maybe that's why it's been named one of the best places to live!   Start making travel plans early for the Texas Shootout Softball Tournament.  You don't want to miss Austin this Labor Day!  Check out hotel and travel information on the left side of the page!

Austin's Skyline from Across Lake Austin
Austin is traditionally a hot spot for Labor Day vacationers.  Shopping, cultural activities and restaurants are all world class in Central Texas.  Got a couple of hours to kill downtown?  Town Lake has several miles of hike and bike trails perfect for a quick run to get the blood flowing!  Maybe you prefer something a little more relaxed like shopping, or taking in a museum.  No problem.  Need help finding the perfect spot for dinner, or the best place to catch a live band (Austin's not called the Live Music Capital of the World for nothing!) check out Austin 360.  There's always something to do in Austin, but sometimes you need a little help finding all the info.  While in town, pick up a free copy of the Austin Chronicle for the latest in events.  Check out their website as well for info on gay and lesbian organizations in Austin.

Austin's Famous 6th Street
I'm sure you've heard of Austin's famous Sixth Street, right?  Sixth Street is Austin's live music and social epicenter.  Imagine block after block of bars, pubs, shops, and music venues and you'll have an idea.  Sixth Street is so popular, they close down the street to vehicles Thursday - Saturday nights and holidays.  Although Austin lacks a specifically gay neighborhood, it still has a vibrant gay community and night life.  Gay bars and clubs can primarily be found in downtown's Warehouse District, with other venues scattered around the city.   Check out the Austin Chronicle's gay/lesbian page above for links to some of Austin's most popular bars!

Of course, night time isn't the only time to party in Austin.  Labor Day weekend is the perfect time to party on Lake Travis.  And do we know how to party!  Every year, Hippie Hollow (Texas' only "clothing optional" park) is the site of one of Austin's biggest parties of the year.  I think we'll let the pictures of previous Splash/Perfect Day events speak for themselves .
